The Ghana Police Service in its bid to rid the service of the staff that extort money from drivers has introduced a new campaign.

A new hotline and Whatsapp chat for the Ghana Police Service has been launched for citizens to be able to make complaints when they experience such situations.

The WhatsApp number specifically invites members of the public to send photos or videos of Police personnel taking bribes, extorting money or engaging in any unprofessional conduct.

It is common knowledge that most Ghanaians perceive the Police as corrupt as has often been revealed in surveys and the service has faced allegations of extortion, bribing to downright begging for a very long time now.

In May this year, as part of a campaign to discourage this bad public perception of the Police, the Accra Regional Police Command arrested and detained five Police officers following a complaint of alleged extortion in two separate cases on May 25, 2021, during patrol duties.

Then Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Effia Tenge, said the Police administration was not going to shield any officer found guilty.

Efforts by the Police administration to eradicate the unprofessional conduct has not yielded much progress, however, with the inclusion of a WhatsApp contact, many are optimistic this renewed effort will be successful.

Many people on social media have commended the Police administration for this new campaign.

The WhatsApp number is 0206 639 121.
