Police apologize for Bimbila shooting

An unqualified apology has been rendered by the Northern Regional Police Command over the shooting incident at Bimbilla on Tuesday evening which left one person injured.

According to the command, this action in collaboration with the Military was necessitated following reports on incidents of robbery on the Bimbilla Highway.

The joint operation was targeted at apprehending suspected criminals from their various hideouts in Bimbilla which unfortunately led to the shooting of one Fuseini Osman.

Northern Regional Crime Officer, Supt Baba Ananga revealed that the regional commander had offered to settle the medical bills after visiting Osman.

“It was an exercise of a swoop on a particular locality and that resulted in that incident. The Regional Police Commander led a delegation to visit the victim and interacted with him. The Police Commander apologised to him and promised to take care of his medical bills.”

Supt. Baba Ananga added that the police will continue to deal with all criminal activities in the region.

“It is an ongoing exercise and on the first day we arrested quite a number of criminals that we have put before court. The exercise is going to go on continuously and we are not going to renege on it to ensure that the community is safe.”

According to the chronology of events the victim, Fuseini Osman, was allegedly shot by a soldier in Bimbilla and was immediately transferred to Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Residents in the area were incensed by the incident and some youth even went on a rampage, but calm has now returned.

The family is demanding that the culprit be brought to book though, the victim is said to be in a stable condition.
