Police and Road Safety Commission remove illegal lamps from over 300 vehicles

The Ghana Police Service has collaborated with the National Road Safety Commission to begin a nationwide operation to remove illegally installed lights from vehicles.

In a press statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Monday October 18, the Police reported that a joint team has removed unapproved lamps from more than 300 vehicles in the last four days.

The operation which took place in the Eastern, Northern and Western North Regions will continue across all the sixteen regions until the Police Service and the National Road Safety Commission is able to get rid of all such “dangerous practices”.

Persons whose vehicles are caught with such unapproved lamps installed on them according to the Police will be prosecuted in line with the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, L.I2180 which include a fine not exceeding fifty (50) penalty unit (GHC600) or a term of imprisonment not exceeding three months or both.

The National Road Safety Authority may also impose an administrative penalty of not less than 5000 penalty units (GHC60,000) and not more than 10,000 penalty units (GHC120,000) against institutions whose vehicles violate Regulation 65 in accordance with Section 32 of the National Road Safety Authority Act, 2019 (Act 993).

Also, the Ghana Police Service also sensitized vehicle owners about the dangers associated with the use of unapproved lamps and cautioned them against its installation.

Persons who have them already installed have been asked to remove them before the team catches up with them.
