Pay GHS50 million debt or we will not approve a new Mayor nominee – KMA to Akufo-Addo
The tussle for who becomes Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive in the various MMDAs took centre stage this weekend as the nominations were released. The plea from stakeholders for some persons did not yield the expected results amidst the controversies that come with the release of the nominees’ list.
For the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, the Assembly Members have threatened to reject the newly appointed Mayor of Kumasi Sam Pyne if the government does not pay the GHS50 million debt the assembly has incurred.
Citing that the issue has caused underdevelopment in Kumasi Presiding Member of the Assembly further reiterated that they will not approve any nominee till their debts are cleared.
He revealed that that debt had been incurred since president Kufuor’s tenure but when the National Democratic Congress came to power, it paid the Accra and Tema Metropolitan Assemblies’ debts leaving KMA ‘s own hanging.
However, the new nominee Samuel Payne appealed to the assembly members to rescind their decision since it will not help with the development of the city.
Mr Samuel Pyne added that he believes he is very much competent to occupy the position and will drive development in the metropolis.
For the Kumasi Metropolis, in particular, residents waited with bated breath for the announcement of the next mayor for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
Nine persons including the then incumbent, Osei Assibey Antwi indicated their willingness to take up the position.
