I have regretted trusting Akufo-Addo and that is my only regret in life – Former Special Prosecutor fires Akufo-Addo in a fresh attack

Martin Amidu - Former Special Prosecutor

Former Attorney General and Ghana’s first-ever Special Prosecutor, Martin Alamisi Amidu has stated that his only regret in life is trusting Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

Having said that he is fully convinced and has confidence that a prominent legal practitioner who held the office of the Attorney General in the late President Mills led administration, has the integrity, courage to carrying out his office responsibilities well, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo in January 2018 named Mr Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor.

The action was taken by Nana Addo in his quest to fight bribery and corruption to bring justice and order to the country.

Martin Amidu later in the year 2020 resigned from his position with one major reason that the condition upon which he accepted the appointment was Nana Addo’s firm promise to curb corruption, respect and ensure same by NPP government for his freedom of action as the Special Prosecutor, did not go the way as told by Nana Addo.

He stated that he had a traumatic experience and the reaction he received concerning his quest to produce the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transaction Anti-corruption report, convinced him against all odds that he was not intended to exercise his independence as far as his office was concerned.

In a new report coming, the former prosecutor has said, he allowed himself to be coerced by the President in a certain way. He added that he believed Akufo-Addo was not going to use the criminal justice system to prosecute his political opponents.

Mr Martin Amidu has also expressed his feeling by saying his only regret in life is trusting President Akufo-Addo as someone who genuinely wanted to fight corruption and get Ghana going forward but who has turned out to be what be different from what was promised.

“My only regret in life is trusting Akufo Addo” he stated.
