President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries to continue working toward the global goals of peace, common security, prosperity, and interdependence on Monday.

He stated that the conference must make far-reaching choices in order to create a more equitable and balanced world, based on the premise of sovereign state equality.

“The need for self-reliance today in the global south is as important as positive neutralism was in the era of the Cold War. The impact of the pandemic on our populations has been severe. We must stand shoulder-to-shoulder, and be resolved to ensure that we are better prepared for future pandemics”, the president advocated.

He further called on other leaders “not to miss the opportunity of the occasion to take far-reaching decisions for a more equitable and balanced world, based on the principle of the equality of sovereign States”.

“We should continue to work towards the global objectives of peace, development and inter-dependence,” the President said.

In terms of defending the interests of developing countries, President Akufo-Addo underlined Ghana’s belief that the Non-Aligned Movement is just as vital in the twenty-first century as it was in the twentieth.

“There will be challenges, but by working together, we can move forward and, indeed, much further, particularly when the global financial system is reorganized to accommodate our economy’s rapid expansion.

The next 60 years of our Movement must mark its empowerment to meet the wishes and aspirations of our peoples for development, dignity and diversity,” he added.

A group of 120 countries in the developing world, the Non-Aligned Movement member countries are not explicitly aligned with or against any major power bloc. It is the second-largest grouping of countries in the world after the United Nations.

The 60th-anniversary gathering is being hosted by the governments of Serbia and Azerbaijan.
