Snippets of information trickling in point to some good news for those along the land borders as they could soon heave a sigh of relief with Ghana’s land borders anticipated to be opened within the next two weeks.

As a matter of fact, this was part of the agreements reached during a two-day crunch cabinet meeting led by President Akufo-Addo.

It has been two years since the land borders, which were closed in March 2020 due to Covid-19 and though it will be reopened it will be subject to land protocols.

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah prior to the meeting had hinted at such a decision after he pointed out that the president had been engaged in meetings in that direction.

Meanwhile, opposition figures with former President Mahama leading the charge had also mounted pressure on the government demanding the immediate reopening of the borders, claiming it is worsening the economic conditions of persons living in border towns.

“The long border closures have devastated the economy of our border communities,” Mr Mahama posted on Facebook on Saturday, March 19.

“Government’s announcement that it is deliberating at Cabinet about a possible opening of our land borders is long overdue.

“Let’s open the land borders now!”

Aside from the border reopening, Cabinet also agreed on far-reaching expenditure cuts to affect the Executive, ministries, departments and agencies (MDA).
