I may not return home alive, Mama, remember I died fighting for the betterment of the next generation – #FixTheCountry
As Ghanaian youth hit the streets of Accra on the morning of August 4, protesting for issues that affect the lives of the citizens to be attended to by the government, several messages were displayed as is normal of every protest march.
One message however is melting the hearts of many on social media as this particular protestor has taken a clue from previous happenings to write his “will”. This was a simple one. It is not to share his properties among his kinsmen or spouse or children.
He was making a statement that would live with the masses who read it forever. He is simply drawing the attention of his family, friends and all to the reason why he was part of the thousands of youth marching in the streets of Accra on the morning of Wednesday.
His message read, “I may not return home alive from this ‘demo’. And if I don’t, Mama, remember died fighting for the betterment of the next generation”
This message from the young Ghanaian to his mother was not any normal message and would have not surfaced had it not being for the history of demonstrations in the country. In September 2015, a 36-year-old Justice Adzakumah lost his eye during a protest for a new voter register ahead of the 2016 general elections.
Just recently, a protest by the youth of Ejura following the killing of a social activist Iddrisu ‘Kaaka’ Mohammed led to the use of live bullets by security forces deployed to control the crowd. That action resulted in the death of two others and prompted the constitution of a 3-member Commission of Inquiry to probe the incident and recommend actions to avoid future occurrences.
The message is thus a call to security agencies to protect lives not take lives nor abuse lives. Hopefully, this young Ghanaian and the rest return home alive and unharmed.
