Former President John Dramani Mahama has said he has lost trust in Ghana’s judiciary because the third arm of government has had its image tainted.

For him, this is evident in recent judgments delivered by the courts in Ghana, led by the Supreme Court.

Mr John Mahama pointed out that it is about time the judiciary did some self-introspection and purge itself though he believes current Chief Justice Anin-Yeboah cannot lead the process.

Former president Mahama’s petition after his defeat in the 2020 polls was dismissed by the Apex court.

He expressed his thoughts as he opened the 2nd annual lawyer conference of the National Democratic Congress on Sunday, August 28 2022.

“Recently, so badly has the image of our judiciary deteriorated that many of our citizenries openly make a mockery of our justice system and of our justices. The phrase ‘go to court’ is these days met with derisive laughter instead of hope that one will truly get justice if he went to court.

“If people are not poking fun about politics and inducement being used to sway the hand of justice in the Lower Courts then it is poking fun and making statements about the 7:0 of the unanimous FC, verdicts which mostly involve cases of a political nature in our Supreme court, this is an unfortunate but serious development.

He further intimated that for the citizenry not to believe in its existing channels of justice is scary and expressed disappointment at how a caution by the National Security Minister regarding such a situation being a threat to our democracy was received by the president and his team.

President Mahama reiterated that such a situation should be addressed lest we get to a point where people will take the law into their own hands due to their lack of confidence in the justice system.

He then called on the judiciary to work at cleansing itself to win back the trust of Ghanaians that they are not biased and was not confident of Justice Annin Yeboah leading such a charge and hoped a new Chief justice will do that.
