I was a coach for the young football team. I took the opportunity to entertain the whole prison.

Abuga Pele - Former Chiana-Paga

Mr Abuga Pele, former Chiana-Paga MP says he made a huge impact in the lives of his fellow inmates when he was sentenced to six years imprisonment at the Nsawam Prison.

According to him, he dedicated his life in prison to the service of other convicts to change their lives. “The people in prisons are my younger brothers, sisters and fathers. Some of them needed help and maybe God sent me there to help them”

Mr Pele became the headmaster and a football coach to the inmates. He saw it as an opportunity to help and entertain the inmates and the officers. “I became the headmaster of the school of graduates. They do distance learning courses from the University of Cape Coast. I was a coach for the young football team. I took the opportunity to entertain the whole prison.”

The former NDC MP was sentenced to six years imprisonment by an Accra High Court in 2018 for causing financial loss to the state during his time as coordinator for the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency, GYEEDA.

He was granted a presidential pardon by President Akufo-Addo three years into his sentence on health grounds. Upon returning to his hometown, Nakolo in the Upper East region, he was welcomed with joy from the people of the constituency on August 21.

Mr Pele refused to talk about the things that led to his incarceration. In a speech to the people, he said, there are a lot of things to explain and say but at the right time.

“Thank God for my release. I thank the President and the people of Nakolo. I thank all the people who were instrumental in getting me out of prison. There is another day that may come to enable me to explain and say a lot of things. If I have not said anything concerning my incarceration or what led to it or what the outcome has been, it is because the truth as it is has been said often and will surely come out one day.”
