The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has on July 12,2022 commenced demolishing unauthorised structures and projects in some areas of Accra.

Ayigbe Town, Bawaleshie, Adjringano, and some of the areas behind the Fiesta Royale Hotel are among the affected communities.

According to GRIDCo the exercise is to get rid of encroachers whose activities pose a threat to transmission towers on its Right of Way (RoW).

GRIDCo also stated that the move is to avert a seeming danger while saving the lives of the encroachers.

In October 2021, some identified District Assemblies, the Media in partnership with GRIDCo undertook a nationwide Right of Way sensitization exercise to educate encroachers of the risk associated with their activities along the Company’s Right of Way.

On the course of that sensitisation exercise, GRIDCo urged encroachers to comply with timelines provided in media publications to prevent any inconveniences.

Under the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (LI 542) as amended by Regulation No. LI 1737 of 2004, it is an offence for persons or institutions to conduct any form of activity in relation to the lands around the location of power transmission lines and towers in Ghana.

“Operations including, drilling, excavation works, lorry parks, shops, garages, bars, and real estate undertaken within the RoW reservations are strictly prohibited. These activities according to the regulation pose danger to human life and property as transmission line faults can result in human casualties
and damage to property”, the regulations stated.

In order to protect public safety and guarantee the dependability of electricity transmission, GRIDCo reiterated that they continues to work with all pertinent state entities to remove land and buildings that have been recognized as the result of illegal human activity.
