Following threats by the University Teachers Association of Ghana to resume their suspended strike action, the government has called the leadership of UTAG for a meeting today October 6, 2021.

The association was not enthused the one-month moratorium agreed between them and their employer has elapsed without the two parties reaching any reasonable solution despite they[UTAG] taking some compromises to ensure they reach a logical conclusion.

“Unfortunately, within the one-month moratorium, the Employer never shifted its position even though UTAG made a number of concessions,” UTAG said in a statement dated Tuesday, October 5.

This however necessitated the association issuing an ultimatum to the government that if the employer’s position does not change by Friday, October 8, members will have no other option than to resume the strike action suspended in August.

But information gathered indicates that the Education Ministry will meet the university lecturers at exactly 3:00 pm today “for further negotiations”.

The move by the ministry is ostensibly to avert the fresh threats of strike.

Present at the meeting will include stakeholders such as representatives from the Finance Ministry and Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
