The detection of the Omicron variant in Ghana has caused President Akufo-Addo to be worried about the possibility of Ghana being included in the list of countries that are banned from international travels as a result.

For him, he feared that Ghana may soon face such a situation as happened in other African countries including Nigeria and South Africa.

His fear is coming on the back of the recent announcement by the Ghana Health Service that the Omicron variant had been detected in Ghana.

So far 34 cases had been detected by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research in their sequenced samples taken from about 120 returning travellers.

However, President Akufo-Addo whiles briefing the press on December 7 2021  at the jubilee house pointed out that the ban is not done on a fair basis.

He then assured of the government’s resolve to ensure that the entire citizenry is protected against this disease.

“Yes, obviously, I share the fear that we may also be blacklisted even though it has not been done on any basis because if it was done on a fair basis, South Africa itself would not be the object of the ban. People are acting in an arbitrary manner responding to political or racial or whatever considerations but there is nothing we can do about it except to protect ourselves and make sure we put ourselves in a good position.”

As a contingency plan to curb the spread of the virus, a robust testing system has been put in place at Kotoka International Airport to manage this new covid variant and curb its spread in the country.
