Ghanaians residing in South Africa have been cautioned by the Ghana High Commission over a plan by some South Africans to hit the streets to express their anger over the presence of foreigners in the country.

A statement issued by the commission revealed a plan by a certain group which does not like the idea of having foreigners in the country to remove the foreigners from their jobs by September.

The commission expressed concern in its statement saying “Whilst recognising that this is not a government or state policy, such activities by individuals or groups could degenerate into violence aimed at foreigners or threaten their lives, safety and livelihood”.

This situation reported by the Ghana Missions, unfortunately, brings back dreaded memories of some Xenophobic attacks in South Africa between 2000 and 2008 and recently in 2015 saw many South Africans blame other Africans nationals in the country for the economic woes, crimes and inability of the government to perform. The 2015 attacks led to many African governments repatriating their citizens from the country.

In such instances, the foreign Africans are targeted during demonstrations as they are attacked with some having their shops looted and even some burnt down.

Members of the Ghanaian community have been advised by the Ghana Mission to be vigilant, stay in safe areas and not engage in activities that could compromise their safety.
