E/R: Illegal demolition by a developer leaves over 40 persons homeless at Panpanso

An illegal demolition exercise carried out by masked men at Panpanso No 1 community near Teacher Mante on the orders of an alleged real estate developer has left the angry residents to go on a rampage.

The victims became so agitated and at a point embarked on a spontaneous protest blocking the main Accra – Kumasi Highway.

Protestors numbering over 200 blocked the highway with logs and stones and additionally burnt tyres which created gridlock on the road.

Police from Teacher Mante led by the District Commander ASP Mr Francis K. Nartey had to rush to the scene to meet the group of aggrieved residents numbering over 200 blocking the road with logs and burning lorry tyres and successfully managed to calm the angry protestors down to clear the road which they obliged.

Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh explained that the police team visited the scene of the demolished buildings and found eleven (11) houses pulled down with a payloader machine for no apparent reason leaving the dwellers homeless.

However, the payloader machine and most of the suspects fled the scene before the arrival of the police.

Meanwhile,  an Okoda rider called Dogbe, aged 23 years was arrested for his alleged involvement.

The police assured that they were assiduously working to arrest one Kofi Acquah, alleged to be the leader of the group that demolished the buildings.

Chief Superintendent Magnus Sam and the Nsawam Municipal Chief Executive Hon Mr Isaac Kojo Boabeng have also visited the scene to assess the situation.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, were also on the grounds for assessment and to facilitate emergency support for the victims.
