Dagaabas beat Frafras to win puppy at 25th annual fun games at El Wak
With the ultimate being a puppy and the bragging rights, the Dagaabas versus Frafras fun games was lit and packed with fun, brotherliness and friendship brewed in ancestral blood.
The annual event that now transcends beyond the two tribes to include tribes from other parts of Ghana entered is silver jubilee edition this year, two years from the real anniversary year due to the outbreak of Covid-19 which ensured there was no event in 2020 and 2021.
Some of the key sporting activities at the event included football(both men and women) and men’s volleyball. The Dagaabas as usual came to the games fully prepared and were ready to win the ultimate, the puppy.
In the men’s football, the Dagaabas beat their counterparts hands down with four unanswered goals. A lone goal in the first half gave the Frafras a chance of coming back but poor team work and low coordination meant they could not hold their breathe against the meticulous Dagaabas who raged on with believe and purpose. Two quick second half goals forced the Frafras to go deep into their reserves by subbing off the goalkeeper but the substitute lasted no more than five minutes before he also begun conceding. He, however, was able to gain grounds and made a number of good saves to keep the score line the same as the game wore out and ended 4-0 for the Dagaabas.
Women’s football followed with more dignitaries including former President John Dramani Mahama joining the Interior Minister Hon. Ambrose Dery in the stands to watch the game. Just like the men, the Dagaaba Ladies started off well but could not overcome brilliant Frafra side that had a team made of talents on individual level. They, however, managed to break the deadlock and went ahead 1-0. Soon it became 2-0 against the Frafras who found a consolation later to see the game out 2-1 for the Dagaabas.
Men’s volleyball which turned out to be the most competitive aside from the women’s football saw the teams go even after each side won a set each before the final round. The Frafras who looked inferior before their counterparts who had national team players and other professionals among them started off on the front foot with the first rally leading them to 3 points. They then continued and pushed beyond 10 points before the Dagaabas caught up later after playing themselves into the game. The Dagaabas then led from point 13th and rallied ahead to win the first set. A rejuvenated Frafra side fought back after going down early in the second set to win the second set before the close-shoulder third set ended in favour of the Dagaabas to hand them a 2-1 victory, their third major win of the evening.
Other games that also were played included football between Oldies which ended 1-1. Sack race for both women and men was won by Dagaabas. And the tug of peace was also won by the Dagaabas, ensuring a clean sweep to claim the puppy and other trophies as well as the bragging rights.
