The Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators today December 6, 2021, has commenced a sit-down strike action in protest against the government over the skyrocketing fuel prices in Ghana.

The drivers have been cautioning the government over their intended action for about a week now.

The angry drivers indicated that their action was necessitated due to the fact that government did not heed their request to take out some levies on fuels to reduce the fuel prices.

Mr Abass Imoro who is the head of communications for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union said their call to the government is to have the issues they have raised so far about their jobs addressed.

“We have realized they [government] are not taking us seriously hence our insistence to make sure we start the strike on Monday, December 6, 2021.”

“Maybe when we start the strike and they realise how serious we are, they will start taking us seriously. We can’t tell how long the strike will take but we have further plans which we cannot reveal now.”

He seized the opportunity to apologize to  Ghanaians to bear with them as they embark on this industrial action in their quest for better working conditions.

Mr Abass indicated that the unions’ decision is not to cause any inconvenience to passengers but to fight for better working conditions for drivers.

“We are pleading with the citizens that we care about them that is why we are embarking on this action for our collective good. We want to assure them that we enjoy the driver-passenger relationship and that we have no bad intention to punish them.”
