The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has put on hold its demand for all public sector employees to register with the National Identification Authority (NIA) and receive a Ghana Card by December 1, 2021, or face losing their salaries in subsequent months.

Instead, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has been entrusted with transferring the names of public sector employees from their old database to the National Identification Authority (NIA) platform and informing the various institutions of any unregistered employees.

According to reports, the latest decision was reached at a meeting between the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, the Ministry of Finance, CAGD, and the leadership of organized labour representing public sector workers on CAGD payroll on Tuesday morning.

The CAGD has issued a statement last week demanding that all persons on the government’s payroll whose salaries go through the Controllers and Accountant General Department should secure their Ghana Cards before December 1, 2021, failure to do would result in the forfeiture of salaries after the date had elapsed.

That directive caused a lot of eyebrows to be raised with many organized labour unions appealing to the department to put on hold their directive or just quash. Some of them complained that the strategy used by CAGD was not appropriate as they[workers] felt threatened by the directive.
