Bawumia isn’t the economics messiah after all, the Cedi has exposed him – Ivan Kyei Innocent

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Vociferous social commentator, Ivan Kyei Innocent during a discussion on the Active Morning Show regarding the recent upward adjustment of tariffs stated that he is not surprised about the outcome as issues of tariff increment have not occurred under one government and indicated that it is at this difficult time government is expected to balance activities.

He reiterated this saying, “we are now in an economic strive you do not burden the citizenry in fact  government was expected to share the burden to alleviate the plight of the citizenry”.

Referencing measures the United States of America did in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic to lighten its impact on the people, he said the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) mandate is backed by law to increase the tariffs but this was where government buffers which it was expected to build over the years should have come in to stabilize the situation.

He went on to accuse the government of having no buffers to stabilize the situation due to mismanagement and zoomed in on Dr Mahamudu and how vociferous he was on the campaign trail and the theoretical lecturers before the New Patriotic Party finally clinched power and assumed office. According to Mr Kyei Innocent “the cedi has rather restored Dr Bawumia to who he is and that he is not the economic messiah he was tipped to be after all”.

Still on the issue of Dr Bawumia and his performance so far as the leader of the Economic Management Team, Mr Kyei Innocent referred to how other personalities like the late Prof John Evans Atta-Mills and John Dramani Mahama seized the opportunity of being vice presidents to click to prominence by assuming the apex seat of the presidency but he perceives that Dr Bawumia is rather using the office to tarnish his record and image by his below-par performance so far at managing the economy.

A peeved Mr Kyei Innocent could not understand why with the economy on the verge of sinking, government is still blaming the woes on Ukraine and Russia while Ghana’s immediate neighbours have single-digit inflation despite the war with only Ghana having double figures.

“My fear is the government not doing well to salvage the situation banging all our hopes on the International Monetary Fund bailout instead of also finding some homegrown policies as well to salvage the economy,” he lamented.

Citing the path most industrious countries the world over took to turn their economies around he said, “if you have all the resources and do not apply the wisdom you lose in the end,” thus it is time for Ghana as a country to be the determinant of the destinies of its people and not external figures.
