President of the Catholic Bishops Conference Most Rev Philip Naameh has in a media briefing today October 11,  2021, debunked a story attributed to him making headlines on some major news sites saying Ghana risk being an Islamic state should Lesbians, Gays, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) gain the recognition to practice.

According to the leader of the Catholic Bishop Conference, it is a palpable falsehood and does not reflect his position on the issue.

He categorically also stated that the church’s support to pass the anti-LGBTQI plus bill dubbed “The Promotion of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family value bill 2021” is unwavering and has not changed as previously stated on various media platforms he has granted interviews.

‘’In my 44 years as a Catholic priest we have strived at nothing but building a peaceful co-existence with people of other faith and this has continued till now,’’ he said

According to the priest, this is just a ploy to cause disaffection for him and the church and therefore urged Ghanaians to disregard the news with all the contempt it deserves.

He further indicated that this will not stop him and the Catholic Bishops Conference and the other faiths from pushing for the anti-LGBTQI+ bill to be passed.

This has added up to the unending debate over the LGBTQI+ bill and related issues that have been topical in Ghana for some time now.
