98% of Covid-19 patients at Ga East treatment centre are unvaccinated
Countries over the world still struggle to come to realities with the Covid-19 pandemic most especially developing countries that do not produce vaccines or even have the money to procure some. Ghana’s situation is no different from the majority of the African states that are bootstrapping vaccines from other countries and heavily reliant on donor support.
It has now been revealed that the majority of the cases at some treatment centres in Ghana are persons who had not been vaccinated. That is not actually surprising considering the population of Ghanaians who have been completely vaccinated so far stands at 405, 971 and another 865, 422 only receiving a single dose. This out of the 20 million target population is still insignificant.
One of the centres which have such high numbers is the Ga East Infectious Disease Centre where it has been reported that about 98% of patients under Covid-19 treatment had not been vaccinated.
Meanwhile, Presidential advisor on health, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare has described the trend as worrying and reiterated the fact that getting vaccinated is very important saying even when you are infected with Covid-19 and you have taken your jab the case is usually not severe as compared to the person who has not been vaccinated at all.
Mr Nsiah Asare then assured that the next set of vaccines to be procured will go through the whole country to cover those who have not been vaccinated in other regions as well.
According to the Ghana Health Service Covid-19 dashboard, there are 6,701 active Covid-19 cases and unfortunately, the total death toll is at 1,069 as at September 2, 2021.
