Terrorist attack in Burkina Faso

Mr. Daniel Glikpo, Director of the North Tongu District National Commission for Civic Education has stated that terrorist attacks can occur anywhere in the sub-region, including Ghana.

He warned Ghanaians against becoming complacent and taking terrorist threats lightly saying, “It has become everyone’s obligation to be on the lookout because what happened in neighbouring countries like Burkina Faso might happen in Ghana as well.”

Mr Glikpo, while speaking at an inter-party Dialogue Committee meeting in Battor, advised all Ghanaians, particularly the youth to be vigilant and report miscreants with terrorist inclinations so that security authorities can foil their plots on time.

“It has become necessary for everyone to be on the watch out for people who come to their communities and look suspicious and report these people to the security agencies and community leaders so that they will be investigated.”

Terrorists and extremists target the youth to promote their agenda, according to Mr Glikpo, reckoning that “when the youth are radicalized, they exhibit some signs, such as isolating themselves from their family and friends, unwillingness to discuss their views, and sudden disrespect for others, which should be looked out for to stop the tide before it escalates.”

He said terrorist actions included the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, particularly against civilians in the pursuit of political goals, as well as fanaticism, which he defined as harbouring extreme political or religious views.

Mr Glikpo stated that the Western Togoland secessionist group was an example of violent extremism, adding that “it has been difficult to understand why the Western Togoland people made attacks at North Tongu, despite the fact that their own records do not show that North Tongu was part of where they wish to claim independence for.”

He urged everyone to be security alert and suggested that all neighbourhoods organize neighbourhood watchdogs in collaboration with the Police and the District Assemblies.

Mr Kenneth Kponor, NCCE’s Volta Regional Director and Mr Vincent Adzika, NCCE’s Akatsi South Municipal Director, were both present at the meeting.
