Anthony Boateng - Deputy Director of Management Services of the Ghana Education Service

A decision by the Ministry of Education to extend the contract of Mr Anthony Boateng who is the Deputy Director of Management Service at the Ghana Education Service has been justified by the Ministry.

The Ministry defended its decision saying the expert ideas of Mr Boateng are really needed in the service to improve the sector.

However, there is uneasy calm within the education fraternity, especially within the teacher unions urging him not to accept the extension but rather retire honourably.

It rather urged the GES to ensure all those who have reached the retirement age retire honourably and hand over to their successor.

Responding to the unions’ demand for the decision to be revoked, Mr Yaw Opoku Mensah, Deputy Public Relations officer of the Education Ministry made it clear that the government is not bound to yield to their demands

He also reiterated the need to incorporate the expertise of  Mr Boateng to execute the needed change in the sector.

Interestingly the teacher unions that do not side with the Ministry’s decision on this extension of the contract include the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Teachers and Education Workers Union, and Coalition of Concerned Teachers.

Should Mr Boateng accept the offer, he will continue to aid the bringing up of the National Education Institute by the Ministry of Education.
