The Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana as part of measures to cleanse the media terrain has appealed to the government to bring out better forms of communication to address issues in the media.

Mr Andrew Edwin Arthur, during his induction as president alongside his other executives at the International Press Centre, said that as a country it is better to have bad press than no press at all.

He, however, pointed out some pertinent issues facing the media saying “Some of the problems that lead to the Ghanaian media dwindling in their influence and thus suffering a patronage crisis is our reckless and unprofessional conduct where we decide to ignore our ethics”.

He made a call to media practitioners that it is time to step up professional standards of truth, fairness, accuracy and balanced reportage in all our endeavours.

Mr Arthur also raised a concern with the manner in which the media space is being handled by government and media managers.

According to him, those strategies in handling media are long gone hence the need for new contemporary strategies in dealing with issues of the media.

“And we urge them to have a paradigm shift and to engage more with the media associations to save the Ghanaian media from falling into an abyss,” he appealed.

On the other hand, Mr Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, chairman of the National Media Commission expressed satisfaction with how the issue between the Oyerepa FM and the Kumasi Traditional Council was resolved through the engagement with chiefs.

For him, since using the law alone was not sufficient they[NMC] were required under the law to use appropriate means to address the situation which he believed they did well.
