Akufo-Addo lawyer and 14 others kick against the anti-gay bill, petitions Parliament
A group of fifteen renowned personalities in Ghana have petitioned Parliament against the LGBTQ+ bill.
In a memorandum they sent to parliament, these renowned personalities indicated that the LGBTQ+ bill when passed will violate most of the fundamental human rights and freedoms of Ghanaians granted them under the constitution.
They went on to add that the bill when passed into law will violate the dignity of every person and will not secure them from assault, trespass, violation or profanation as guaranteed under Article 15 of the 1992 constitution of the Republic of Ghana.
“…the Bill violates the dignity and inviolability of every person, guaranteed under Article 15; it violates the principle of equality before the law, and the right to freedom from discrimination on grounds of gender, race, colour, ethnic origin…” a section of the petition read.
The memorandum which was sent to Parliament had the backing of President Akufo-Addo’s lawyer, Akoto Ampaw, Professor Emerita Takyiwaa Manu, Kwame Kakari, Kofi Gyimah-Boadi, Audrey Gadzepko, H. Kwasi Prempeh, Raymond Atuguba and Dzodzi Tsikata. Others are Dr Yao Graham, Rose Kutin-Mensah, Kojo Asante, Mr Kwesi Adu-Amankwa, Akunu Dake, Tetteh Homerku-Adjei and Kofi Ofei-Nkansah.
It will be recalled that social and traditional media was filled with heated arguments when a section of the Bill against LQBTQI+ was leaked. Hon. Samuel Nartey George was at the helm of this debate as he was ready to take down anyone who was in stiff opposition to this bill. He got in a feud with musician Sister Derby and a former UK Member of Parliament while calling for persons who are willing to debate him on the bill to come forward.
