Tell us what Joe Mettle did to deserve Artiste of Year nomination – Ras Kuuku asks Charterhouse
Ghanaian Reggae Dancehall artiste, Kojo Kurankye, known in showbiz as Ras Kuuku has said “Joe Mettle did nothing in the year under review to have received a nomination in the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category as part of the 2022 Vodafone Ghana music awards.
The ‘Me Mpeabo’ hit singer while commenting on the recent VGMA nomination that featured him and Joe Mettle in one category contends that “Joe Mettle has not ticked all criteria required to secure a spot in the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category.
“The ‘Artiste of the Year’, they always say those who have worked hard. Those whose song has been a hit, at least 1 or 2 songs. You have an album. You’ve performed here and there. All those over there, they’re cool. You know they did so well, but in terms of Joe Mettle, we all want to know what he actually did for him to be there.”
According to Ras Kuuku, “Joe Mettle did nothing last year. It’s a fact! I’m not supposed to listen to gospel songs before I know a hit song in this country. It’s fact. He did nothing. And I can see that even if he works hard, that means next year, he’s going to be given the MUSIGA president. This is how I see it because he does nothing, and yet, we give him ‘Artiste of the Year’.
“I’m complaining because I didn’t see Fameye over there, and I saw Joe Mettle. When you check Fameye’s Praise, which of Joe Mettle’s songs within last year can be compared to Fameye’s Praise? Tell me. We call ourselves churchgoers. Let’s speak the facts,” he stated.
Ras Kuuku did not mince words as he criticized the organisers of the award scheme for giving Joe Mettle preferential treatment because of his ‘gospel musician’ status.
He concluded that “Joe Mettle is a good artiste. He’s a good composer. No two ways about that. He’s our brother. But the truth is, what did he do to deserve ‘Artiste of the Year’? Is it for only gospel artists? Even if you don’t do anything because you go to church and you sing for them, so, you have to be there”.
