Make a concerted effort to promote Ghanaian music – M.Anifest to DJs

M.anifest, a Ghanaian rapper, has asked DJs to actively promote Ghanaian music.

In response to the surge of Nigerian music in Ghana, the rapper stated that it is the responsibility of Ghanaian DJs to promote local music.

“The DJs are tastemakers; they have to recognize their position as such and not just be dictated to by the people. You decide that. You are part of making those decisions because you have the position of power,” Manifest challenged.

Following a tweet by rapper D-Black, who voiced concern over why Nigerian music dominated Ghana’s Apple Music Chart, the issue of Ghanaians leaning towards Nigerian music has come up.

M.anifest in a interview with Accra-based Citi FM, urged DJ’s  to make a conscious effort like Amapiano DJs. “They know what they are doing. They are privileging something South African. So we can’t just always be swayed by TikTok and whatever”, M.anifest fumed.

“You are determining next week, the month after, so as a tastemaker, there is too much of throwing our hands in the sky and saying this is the status quo, ” he explained.

However, Solomon Appier-Sign, the Chief Technology Officer of Qisimah, a digital firm, has explained why the trend is occurring.

Apart from the fact that Nigerians outnumber Ghanaians in terms of population, Solomon also stated that many Ghanaians with internet access do not have credit cards or would not bother to buy music online.

According to the Qisimah chairman, digital platforms also scour the internet for relevant content and customize their music accordingly.
