Government payroll is full, try entrepreneurship – Ken Ofori-Atta
The Minister of Finance, Honorable Ken Ofori-Atta has disclosed to the 2021 graduating class of the University of Professional Studies that the government’s payroll is full and has asked them to venture into entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the 2021 graduation ceremony of the University last Saturday, Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta said the government is spending about 60% of Ghana’s revenue on the payment of some 650,000 government workers.
“So, the future for you with regards to jobs of course is the most important at this stage. We have gone through a period when most people look for a job from government or state institutions, but the payroll is full. I can tell you that because we are spending about 60 per cent of our revenue on renumerating some 650,000 people, and that is not sustainable,” Mr Ofori-Atta said.
He added that the government’s responsibility is to create the environment for macro-stability and currency stability and ensure that the Ghanaian youth have access to the relevant skills adding that the government’s budget is going to focus on youth development.
He, therefore, urged the graduating students to make use of the entrepreneurship training given to them by the University of Professional Studies Accra to set up their own businesses so they can also contribute their quota to the economic development of the country.
The Finance Minister also said that the new world doesn’t demand factories that are employing thousands of persons but innovative entrepreneurs who are employing two or three people.
