Preserved since a wedding of July 29, 1981, and at a vintage age, a forty-year-old fruitcake slice is going on auction this week in England. The cake which has survived four decades will change hands for the second time after it first did so 13 years ago.

Now what makes this cake so special that it has been handled with such care for so long is that not only is it a royal cake, it is believed to have been made from former Queen Elizabeth II’s famous cake recipe. This cake slice is specifically from Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding cake.

Moyra Smith, a member of the Queen Mother’s household staff at Clarence House was given this slice of cake. She preserved it with cling film in a cake tin. She then added a label that read, “Handle with Care – Prince Charles & Princess Diane’s (sic) Wedding Cake.”

According to the BBC, a collector had purchased the slice in 2008 from Smith’s family but now wants to auction it in honour of the 40th anniversary of the royal couple. The 28-ounce slice of cake will accordingly be auctioned for nearly £500.

The original cake was 5 feet tall and weighed about 225 pounds. It will be auctioned on August 11, 13 days after the 40th anniversary of the royal wedding.
