Veteran Ghanaian trainer J E Sarpong believes working with Hearts of Oak now could shorten his lifespan.
The 76-year-old, who has managed the former African champions during his heydays made the statement on GTV Sports+ while discussing issues pertaining to Hearts of Oak after the matchday 15 of the Ghana Premier League.
Crisis is now breathing through Hearts of Oak with an entire set of management team resigning from their role with scores of supporters massing up at the club’s secretariat last week to stage a protest against the board of directors.
Following the resignation of Serbian trainer Kosta Papic and the entire technical team including the long-serving Team Manager Sylvester Saban Quaye, juvenile coach Samuel Nii Noi in an interim role.
The U15 head coach guided the Phobians to a hard-fought 3-2 win over Ebusua Dwarfs at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday but are already on the market looking for a permanent head coach.
And, Sarpong who has handled various Ghana national teams and top division clubs including Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko has already distanced himself from the insisting the pressure involved can shorten his lifespan.
“Now no top coach wants the Hearts of Oak job anymore. I told Opare on Sunday that I could coach the team for free if they fuel my car. But, I was kidding you know because I have some years ahead of me and I don’t want to die before the time,” he said on the GTV Sports+ show dubbed The File, hosted by Isaac Tetteh and with journalist El Akyereko on the panel.
Some key local coaches have been linked with the vacant job with Elmina Sharks coach Yaw Acheampong and former player Laryea Kingston both mentioned in the media as possible candidates for the job.
