Road to Qatar 2022: Matchday 1 results from African qualifiers
The journey to Qatar 2022 has started on the African continent with several matches having already taken place. But which teams are on a good start and what are the results? We will provide you with the details of what transpired from the kick of the first ball in the qualifier till now.
Burkina Faso earned a 2-0 victory playing away to Niger in group A. Lassina Traore and Mohamed Konate scored for the Stallions in the 76th and 79th minutes respectively. Their results were however dwarfed by Algeria who mauled Djibouti 8-0 at home. Mauritania lost 1-2 to Zambia and Tunisia beat Equitorial Guinea 3-0 to start Group B. Islam Slimani scored four for the African champions with the remaining goals coming from Ramy Bensebaini, Riyad Mahrez and Ramiz Zerrouki.
In Group C, Nigeria beat Liberia 2-0 at home while the Central African Republic was held by Cape Verde earlier on Wednesday. Kelechi Iheanacho scored a brace for the Super Eagles while Trésor Toropité and Júlio Tavares found the back of the net for CAR and Cape Verde respectively. Meanwhile, in Group D, Mozambique held Ivory Coast to a goalless draw whereas Cameroon earned a 2-0 win over Malawi. Vincent Aboubakar and Michael Ngadeu scored for the Indomitable Lions.
Group E produced two wins with Mali beating Rwanda on Wednesday by a lone goal which was scored by Adama Traore. The other match which was played on Thursday ended in a goalless draw between Kenya and Uganda. Group F produced two victories; Egypt triumphed 1-0 over Angola with Mohamed Magdy Afsha scoring the only goal in the match in the 5th minute from a spot-kick. Libya won 2-1 against Gabon. André Poko scored first for Gabon in the 11th minute before Ali Salama equalized for the host and Sanad Al-Warfali scoring the winner in the 89th minute to force a win for his side.
Zimbabwe and South Africa played a goalless draw while Ghana edged out Ethiopia by a lone goal courtesy of a Mubarak Wakaso’s strike in the 34th minute. Charles Hambira scored both goals for and against Namibia in their 1-1 draw against the Congo Republic in their Group H encounter. Sadio Mane and Abdou Diallo had their names on the score sheet as Senegal beat Togo 2-0 in the other Group H encounter.
Guinea-Bissau and Guinea played out a 1-1 draw in Group I with Joseph Mendes and Francis Kamano scoring for their teams. Morroco beat Sudan 2-0 at home with Nayef Aguerd scoring for the Atlas Lions in the 1oth minute before Bahaeddine Rihan scored an own goal to complete the scoring for the game. Group J produced a win and a draw as Dieumerci Mbokani and Simon Msuva both scored in the first half for DR Congo and Tanzania respectively in their 1-1 stalemate. Benin however was able to snatch a win while playing away to Madagascar with no Steve Mounié scoring the only goal in the match in the 22nd minute of the game.
