Legon Cities survive relegation with a 3-2 win
Legon Cities have survived relegation from the Ghana Premier League on the last day having stared relegation in the face until the final match of the season. A narrow 3-2 defeat of Techiman Eleven Wonders at Accra saved the Royals from going down.
Playing their first full season in Accra following their acquisition by new owners and rebranding from Wa All Stars to Legon Cities, the Royals drifted between mid-table and the bottom half all season making their escape a sweet victory.
Having started with Goran Barjaktarevic who was sacked following a 3-0 loss to Greta Olympics, the club boosting of 14 new signings before the start of the season including Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan swapped in a new coach in the dressing room. Yussif Basigi took over as head coach following the sacking of the Bosnian coach but his reign too will end at the end of the season as Maxwell Konadu is set to occupy that role at the start of next season.
With the mix of both experience and youthful talents in their ranks, they were expected to be a serious force to reckon with but it has been a really difficult one for them as echoed by their assistant coach Wahid Mohammed after their win against Eleven Wonders today.
“We are happy to escape relegation. It’s been a difficult season, to be honest. We hope never to be in such a situation again,” Wahid Mohammed. They will definitely want to be better next season and the work towards that must start now as opined by veteran Ghana goalkeeper and skipper of the side Fatau Dauda post-match. “Things will be different from next season. We will really prepare well and be very ready for it. Let’s wait and see what will happen,”- Fatau Dauda.
They also talk of beefing up the squad to be able to mount a serious competition next season and that could be a welcome delight to incoming coach Maxwell Konadu. “We will beef up the team and make sure we start our preparations very early for the next challenge. We will bring in very committed players who will fight and play for the badge of the club,” – Wahid Mohammed.
It has not been an easy road for the Royals but hopefully, this experience is enough lesson for them going forward and they would do better come next season.
