John Mahama donates GH¢50,000 to RTU to prepare for Premier League return
Former President Mahama and NDC group in Parliament donates GHS50,000 to Real Tamale United
Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has as part of his “thank you tour” of the Northern Region donated a sum of GH¢50,000 to Real Tamale United (RTU) as the club prepares to return to the Ghana Premier League.
The Tamale-based club gained their promotion to the Ghana Premier League after beating Unity FC 2-0 on the final day of the Division One Zone One League to secure a return to the league they last played almost 10 years ago.
The newly-promoted side last time in top-flight football was in 2013 when they were relegated amidst poor performances and financial issues. They finished that season with a paltry 6 points and a whopping negative 49 goal difference.
As part of Mahama’s ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Northern Region, the former president congratulated the club for qualifying for the Ghana Premier League and used the opportunity to call on every individual in the region to support the team, while also pledging GH¢50,000 for their preparations ahead of the new season.
“I want to take this opportunity to congratulate RTU on qualifying to the Premier League and to say that we are all supporters of RTU,” Mahama said, as quoted by Classfmonline.
“And, as the Regional Minister said, let us all come together to support the pride of the north. And, so, between me and the NDC group in parliament led by leader Haruna [Iddrisu], we are going to make a donation of GH¢50,000 to RTU to prepare for the Premier League.
“And that’s not all; we’ll be following all of you guys who are managing the team and we’ll help you so that RTU reclaims its former glory,” he mentioned.
The financial package will come as a huge boost to the Northern Blues as they return to the Premier League. They will hope to avoid a repetition of their last campaign in the top division where they were promoted and go relegated the next season.
