We have heard of wars among men and have seen many if not in real life but their semblances in Hollywood movies. We also have heard of celestial wars, the most told one been that of the Creator against His ‘most beautiful’ servant. Those are just stories, yes stories and probably imaginations.

However, today in the Kasena Nankana West District Division Three league, we are all but set to witness a war that has a flavour of incorporeality played out in the visible. The commonest factor between the two teams in the Division that face today is, both are named after forever-existing objects. One is a godlike inspired name and the other, a super creation of the Creator; Nakolo Divine Strikers and Sirigu Super Stars.

Isn’t it rather fascinating that the final match of the season has a pairing of mortals on one side and immortals on the other? What if we had a mortal versus immortal? The results could be brutal. But worry not, let have fun as that is the purpose of football in the first place.

Sirigu Super Stars, the team from the east of the district will travel to face Nakolo Divine Strikers in the final match of the 2020/21 season in the district. This match was supposed to be played weeks ago but a complaint filed by one of the teams, Afeni FC against the current league leaders, Super Stars led to the suspension of the league pending the decision of the Committee tasked to handle the petition in the district. Why? The outcome of the petition would have a drastic effect on the league table. If it went in favour of the petitioner, Afeni FC would topple the Stars at the summit of the table and thus qualify for the Regional Division Two League, and anything other than that would mean the Stars maintain their position on the table and be promoted to Division Two.

Well, the green light has been given for the league to restart and conclude following the decision of the Committee handling the petition, though the petitioner has gone forward to appeal at the Regional Football Association.

Why is today’s clash with Divine Strikers a standout match?

Every match comes with its odds and this is no different. The season opener was between these two sides at the Sirigu Park (Kaduna) and it ended 2 -1 in favour of today’s travelling party. Since then, the Stars have gone on to win two more matches and drawn two in the process. That success earned them the top position on the table with 11 points and a goal difference of 3.

The Stars are yet to concede while playing away from home, though they have scored only once in their two away games in the league, a 0 – 1 success at the Land of Fire Park at Paga.

Their opponents in today’s contest have earned a paltry 4 points out of 12 available points since their opening day defeat to the Super Stars. They have allowed in three goals and scored two in four matches since shipping in two against the Stars at Kaduna.

This match would have served as a dead-rubber and played like a friendly fixture if both teams did not want to risk so much in order to avoid injuries ahead of the new season but pride is another big thing in football that counts so much, thus each team would want to earn the bragging rights to keep its pride high.

Super Stars would want to end the campaign unbeaten and thus would fight to end it well. They also are in the hunt to finish as the most prolific side in the league and possibly as the team with the meanest defence if they can shut the doors well against the Strikers.

Coach Mohammed led side major concern is their vulnerability in conceding spot-kicks. They have conceded the most penalty goals in the league so far, with three of the goals they conceded coming via spot-kicks. That meant if they were able to discipline themselves and avoid conceding fouls in the box, they would have had more points and conceded less after the five rounds of matches. That would be a loophole beckoning the Nakolo-based club to exploit and it would be a sour end to the season if they should concede fouls in the box today and their goalie, Adama Morris is not able to come to their rescue as he always does and their forwards also fail to respond as they always do.

Both teams thus have well-defined weaknesses that either side can take advantage of and triumph after 90 minutes of football today but discipline would be key for each side to have the results go their way today.

But who comes top today, will it be the Stars who decide not to stay with the galaxies or it will be the Diviners? Whoever comes victorious, would probably have deserved it but will the Stars crumble at the death or would it be the Strikers who would resurrect their hopes for next season with a masterful season-ending match?

Watch the game live at Nakolo Town Park today at 3 pm.
