I am the ‘big fish’ at 147 – Errol Spence talks big ahead of showdown with Ugas
Errol “The Truth” Spence has spoken big ahead of his April 16 unification bout against WBA champion Yordenis Ugas at the AT & T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The WBC and IBF champion who seeks to become the undisputed champion in the division said the bout will lack no fireworks as he expects Ugas to fight at his best the same way he himself will go for it at his best.
The Showtime Pay per View event will be the twelfth time there will be a unification at that level and the winner of the fight will claim the three major titles in the division out of the four available. Terence Crawford holds the WBO title.
“I can guarantee fireworks on April 16. Ugas is going to give it his all, just like I will. I’m going to put on another great performance in front of my hometown crowd. It’s ‘Man Down’ and it’s ‘Strap Season’. I’m the guy everyone is talking about,” said Spence, adding, “The motivation I get from my family and friends allows me to push through everything I’ve gone through”.
He acknowledged his opponent for the fight labelling him as a ‘great warrior’.
“I also have to thank Ugas for agreeing to take this fight with me. He’s a tough competitor who comes to fight. I thought he beat Shawn Porter in 2019 and then he beat Pacquiao with an arm injury. He’s a great warrior, but I believe that it’s my time to show the world that I’m here to win another belt,” he noted.
Spence went on to brag that he is the deal maker in the division and that this fight is a step closer to his dream of becoming undisputed.
“At the end of the day, I want to be the undisputed welterweight champion of the world. This is another step toward that goal. I’ve been the shot caller. I’m the big fish at 147.”
The 32-year-old added “It feels good to be back. It’s a blessing to be in this position. Most people take life for granted until they’re given a second chance, and I’ve been given a second chance in life and a third chance in boxing.”
Spence (27,27, 21 KOs) last fought on December 5, 2020, when he defended his titles against Danny Garcia at the same venue as the upcoming fight.
Ugas meanwhile has a career total of 31 professional fights with 27 wins and 12 of them by knockout. He lost four fights and his last fight was against Manny Pacquaio in August 2021 where he retained his WBA title after 12 rounds.
