Euro 2022: Austria sends Norway home as flamboyant England makes intentions clear
Norway has been shockingly eliminated from the Euro 2022 as they crashed out after a 1-0 defeat against Austria on Friday.
Whereas Austria progresses as runners-up behind group leaders England, Norway recorded a second successive defeat in the tournament, failing to make it out of the group stages.
Record-breaking England, tormented Northern Ireland 5-0 in their last game to move into the last eight with three successive wins and without conceding a single goal.
Norway needed a win against Austria to qualify at their expense but was pushed towards elimination after 37 minutes when Nicole Billa headed in Verena Hanshaw’s cross.
The Norwegians could not muster a comeback and it was Austria who could have won by a more significant margin with more clinical finishing but prolificacy let them down.
Meanwhile, Italy and Iceland will take their bid to reach the Euro 2022 quarter-finals down to the last group game after sharing a 1-1 draw on Thursday.
Norway’s exit means struggling Austria will now come face to face with eight-time European champions Germany in the quarter-finals at Brentford on Thursday. Spain and Denmark are the two other teams with a chance to snatch qualification in Group B with Finland’s hopes almost dashed out totally after failing to earn a point in two games.
