Elmina Sharks beat Kotoko to escape relegation
Elmina Sharks secure status in Premier League with a 0-1 win against Asante Kotoko
Elmina Sharks beat Kumasi Asante Kotoko at 0-1 away from home to maintain their status in the Ghana Premier League next season following a nervy last few weeks in the league.
Staring at relegation ahead of their last match against the reigning FA Cup champions seemed a huge mountain to climb for Sharks. They have however made it through the courtesy of solitary goal against the Porcupine Warriors.
Tahir Mensah scored the life-saving goals for Sharks in the 56th minute to secure the status of the Elmina-based side. Elmina Sharks were in the frame for relegation with King Faisal, Ebusua Dwarfs and Liberty Professionals but have now secured their status as two of the sides join Inter Allies to go down.
Kotoko has now lost three matches in their last five attempts in the league with the other two being a draw and a win. Having ended their league on a bad note after been beaten to the title by arch-rivals Hearts of Oak and losing two of their last two matches in the league, the Porcupine Warriors will now turn their attention to the FA Cup.
The FA Cup remains their only chance to a title this season and only window to play in Africa next season. They would however first have to navigate past Bereum Chelsea in the quarter-finals if they will hope to get a chance to defend the trophy they last won against current league champions, Hearts of Oak.
Elmina Sharks who stunned the Porcupine Warriors to secure their safety will now turn their attention to the FA Cup quarter-final clash against newly crowned champions, Hearts of Oak as they hunt for glory this season. Sharks will host the Phobians at the Nduom Sports Complex on Saturday, a day before Kotoko take on Chelsea at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi.
