Chelsea and Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has become the first African to win the Best Fifa Men’s Goalkeeper award.

He was named the best on Monday after going into the contest against Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer in the final shortlist.

Mendy, 29, was an instrumental figure in Chelsea’s Uefa Champions League triumph in his debut season recording nine clean sheets in the process as Chelsea won the title at the expense of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Edouard Mendy is currently at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with the Teranga Lions of Senegal and he has been described as a pride to the African continent as he looks forward to playing his first match in Cameroon against Malawi on Tuesday having been held back a positive Covid-19 test.
