Defenders step in to cruise Chelsea past Tottenham
In what was supposed to be the toughest London derby for Chelsea thus far, it turned out otherwise even though none of their attackers was on the scoresheet against Nuno Espirito’s side.
The unlikeliest of goal scorers came to the scene to serve the ultimate purpose of Thomas Tuchel’s men, a win to continue their fine start to the season. Thiago Silva scored his third goal for Chelsea since his debut last season and another rare scorer in N’golo Kante was also on hand to add his name to the scoresheet as well.
Following a goalless 45 minutes, Chelsea sprung to full activity immediately after recess and a goal soon came to compensate their deserved efforts. Lloris tipped off a volley from Alonso to gift the Blues a corner which the Spaniard then expertly sent in allowing Silva to nod home the opener unimpeded just four minutes after the break.
Another goal made in the middle of the park came in not so long when Mateo Kovacic played a simple pass to Kante who replaced Mount at the break. The France midfield dynamo rifled a ferocious low strike which deflected off Dier to elude Lloris and trickled inside the net.
Timo Werner who came in with less than 20 minutes to end had a fine act late on to set up another of Chelsea’s centre backs, Antonio Rudiger to score the thrid and final goal two minutes into the added time.
The win lifts Chelsea back to the top of the league with 13 points, the same as Liverpool. They have scored 12 goals in five matches while conceding only once in the league this season. Only Liverpool has the same numbers as the Champions League holders in the new campaign.
Tuchel’s men will face Aston Villa in the EFL third round on Wednesday before welcoming Guardiola’s Manchester City to Stamford Bridge on Saturday ahead of their midweek champions league clash against Juventus.
Tottenham would be disappointed at the results but the second half was a performance that puts no questions on the victory for their London rivals. Nuno will lead his charges out on Wednesday against his former side Wolves in the EFL cup third round before travelling to Arsenal on Sunday in the league. They will wrap up September with a clash at home to Mura in the Uefa Conference League on Thursday.
