Could a Hearts of Oak failure in Accra grant Kotoko another door to the title?

Asante Kotoko could have a chance to fight for league title on last day depending on the outcome of Hearts vs Liberty match.

Fabio Gama - Asante Kotoko

We are into the final two weeks of the Ghana Premier League season and clubs are fighting at either side of the table, some to take places in the top 4, others to avoid relegation.

The Porcupine Warriors who ceded control of the top position on the table to bitter rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak a couple of weeks ago are not yet completely out of the race for the title though that could be over today depending on the outcome of today’s fixtures. Hearts are leading by a margin of 3 points and also have a head-to-head advantage as well as superior goal difference to Kotoko and would regardless win the title even if they end the season with the same points are the Porcupines.

This could however be a different story if Hearts of Oak playing at home to Liberty Professionals slip to the Scientific Soccer Lads and Kotoko get the better side of Bechem United who is also fighting to avoid relegation. In such an eventuality, the title chase will go down to the last day and anything less than a win for Hearts would hand the title in the unlikeliest fashion to the record league champions.

But will Kotoko have the chance to even chase it that far provided the Phobians slip at home against Liberty? It may look like a David vs Goliath match between the Porcupine Warriors and the Hunters but United cannot be underestimated especially as they play at home. They have not been their best selves this season but at home they have not let themselves down that many times, losing only one of their last four home matches.

Mariano Barreto men are good on the road this season, but they would need more than just their record on the road to break the Hunters at their backyard. On the line for United is the race against the drop and they would appreciate every point with just one round of matches left after today. That match is on the road against fellow relegation candidates Ebusua Dwarfs and not wanting to leave anything to chances, they would be all out against the Porcupine Warriors to at least not lose so as to have a chance for survival.

Whatever the results at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park at Bechem, the results at the Accra Sports Stadium would definitely be the determinant.
