Bechem United beat Kotoko to secure premiership status
Kotoko loss to Bechem United as Hunters secure league status for next season
Bechem United ensured Kumasi Asante Kotoko left Bechem empty-handed in their penultimate match of the 2020/21 league season.
The Hunters who have been in the fight against relegation for some time now during the season secured their status in the league for next season ahead of their away trip to relegation-threatened Ebusua Dwarfs next week. Going into the match they had not won in their last three matches with their best performance in that space being two draws against Medeama and Legon Cities.
Kotoko had failed to close the gap on Accra Hearts of Oak last week when they were held to a 1-1 draw by city rivals King Faisal and their season-ending bad fortunes still lingered around to hunt them at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park in Bechem.
Two first-half goals from Steven Owusu Kaakyire were enough to ensure Sarfo Taylor’s 32nd-minute goal become a mere consolation. The Hunters took the lead early in the first when through Steven Owusu in the 5th minute.
Sarfo Taylor equalized for the Porcupine Warriors but that lasted for less than 10 minutes before their tormentor for the day, Steven Owusu got his brace with a penalty in the 41st minute. That ensured United went to the break with one goal advantage over Kotoko.
Neither side could muster any further goals after the recess and the Hunters held on to secure the famous victory against Mariano Barreto’s men. Both sides will be in action next week to climax the season with Kotoko hosting relegation candidates, Elmina Sharks in a game that adds no value to the Porcupine Warriors league position. Bechem United meanwhile will travel to Cape Coast to face Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs who will be hungry to win to ensure their stay in the league for next season.
