Three Ghanaians feature for Crystal Palace as they suffer Premier League opening day defeat to Chelsea
Black Stars duo, Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp were in action for Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 3 – 0 by European champions, Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The Ghanaians played from the start of the game as Patrick Vieira took charge in his first Premier League game as manager of the side following the exit of Roy Hodgson. Schlupp made way for Joachim Andersen with three minutes to the hour mark as Palace trailed by two goals.
Thomas Tuchel’s who were coming of the back of a European Super Cup win over Villarreal in midweek started the game on a positive note and go their deserved lead midway through the first half when Spanish left-back Marcos Alonso curled in a free-kick just from outside the box.
Before going for the break, Christian Pulisic doubled the lead for the Blues in a packed Stamford Bridge after Guita spilt the ball into the way of the American who guided the ball into the net with five minutes of the half left to play.
Chelsea’s dominance continued straight from the break and they were rightfully rewarded when young defender, Trevoh Chalobah scored a beauty from a fierce shot outside the box. The defender, making his Premier League debut received the ball from Kovacic from the left-flank and beautifully powered a shot into the bottom-left corner to mark an excellent debut and cap a superb week in the royal blue colours.
Another Ghanaian in 18-year-old Jesurun Rak-Sakyi joined the game with about 10 minutes to play as Palace chased a consolation. Ayew did last the entire game as Palace return to Selhurst Park with no point in their first Premier League match of the season.
