Ashgold beat Top Talents to book a place in FA Cup semi-finals
Ashanti Gold Sporting Club beat lower-tier side Kintampo To Talents in a six-goal thriller in their MTN FA Cup quarter-final encounter at the Obuasi Len Clay stadium. They became the first side to book their place in the last four of the competition as they chase the last piece of silverware for the season.
Kintampo Top Talents were one of the two lower sides that qualified from the last 16 stages and were paired with the premier league heavyweights who have been notorious for some of the high scoring matches in the just ended league season.
The third tier side beat division one side Tamale City 3-2 in the previous round would have been motivated to cause another shock even on a bigger scale than before. However, they could not punish the Miners and have been sent crashing out of the competition.
Ashgold started the assault on the division 2 side with just 16 minutes played when Frank Akoto scored the opener. That soon became 2-0 with less than half an hour played after Opoku Agyemang registered his name on the scoresheet in the 28th minute.
The game however took a different turn, Kwadwo Amoako turned into his own net in the 35th minute to give Top Talent a chance to fight back. They went into recess with the Miners leading by a 2-1.
After the break, Ashgold needed just three minutes to find their scoring rhythm and Paul Asare de Vries restored the Miners two-goal lead in the 48th minute. Amos Addai then put then sealed the results with a goal of his own with 20 minutes left to play in regular time.
Top Talent however was not to just give up without a fight and their efforts paid off when Prince Kofi Sarkodie half the deficit with a 90th-minute goal. That effort was however not enough as they bow out of the competition.
The Obuasi-based side will play the winner of the Kumasi Asante Kotoko versus Berekum Chelsea in the next round.
