Algeria demand a replay of their match against Cameroon even as Fifa holds draw today
The Algeria Football Federation has submitted a complaint to the Caf disciplinary committee protesting the handling of their World Cup playoff home match against Cameroon on Tuesday by the centre referee.
Algeria went into the match with a one-goal advantage after the first leg in Cameroon ended in a 0-1 defeat to the Indomitable Lions at home. Cameroon pegged back to even the tie 22 minutes into the second leg when Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting found the back of the net.
In the extra time after the tie ended even on all levels, Ahmed Touba scored what looked like the winner for Algeria with just two minutes to end proceedings but deep into injury time, Karl Toko-Ekambi netted the goal that would deny the Desert Warriors a place in the five-team contingent to represent the continent in Qatar this November.
The Algeria Football Federation after the match felt the centre referee was not up to the task and that influenced the results thus their decision to request a replay. It said in a statement that “Faf officially lodges an appeal with Fifa against the scandalous arbitration which distorted the result of the match.
“We are determined to use all the legally permitted votes to have their rights restored and to replay the match under conditions guaranteeing the honesty and partiality of the arbitration.”
Their complaint comes after Egypt lodged a similar campaign requesting a replay against Senegal, claiming their players were attacked throughout the game with Mo Salah receiving the biggest share of it.
