10-man Chelsea held by Liverpool at Anfield
Chelsea reduced to 10 men in tensed Anfield clash
Chelsea and Liverpool have both conceded their first goals and dropped points for the first time in the new season following their 1 – 1 draw on Friday evening at Anfield.
Both went into the match on six points and a goal difference of plus five and each hoped to carry maximum points to open the lead at the top but that would not be at the end of 90 minutes when Anthony Taylor whistled for the end of the match.
Kai Havertz put the Blues on the front pedestal with a beautiful header from Reece James free-kick in the 22nd minute of the game. That kept Thomas Tuchel’s side on course to scoop maximum points having had that positive start to the game.
However, on the fifth minute of extra time in the first half, Liverpool found their way back into the game through the penalty spot. Reece James was adjudged to have handled the ball on the line and prevented Sadio Mane’s ball from going in which meant he prevented a goal-scoring opportunity and per the rules was sent off by Taylor after the Video Assistant Referee confirmed the incident. Mohammed Salah sent Edouard Mendy the wrong way from the penalty spot to level for the Reds.
From the break, Liverpool continued their dominance and produced 12 of their 21 attempts at goal in the half but was unable to break the Blues who played the entire half with a man less. Chelsea held on to claim a point from Anfield in a match they would be rueing their luck for what transpired on the field of play.
Liverpool will next be away to Leeds United on August 12 after the international break and Chelsea will be in action at Stamford Bridge against Aston Villa a day before.
