Former President John Dramani Mahama has declared that the NDC will work with the Speaker of Parliament and their members of parliament to ensure free and fair elections in 2024.

Mr Mahama made this declaration during an interview on Ashanti Region-based New Mercury FM as part of his “Thank You” tour in the region.

Speaking on the aftermath of election 2020, the former NDC flagbearer said that they had proposed some electoral reforms to the Electoral Commission. He said that these reforms were motivated by the party’s quest to make the 2024 elections and those beyond free and fair.

John Mahama added that these reforms are not novel because, after every election, political parties make these proposals for electoral reforms and are considered at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee and adopted if found appropriate.

However, the former president expressed concerns about the Electoral Commission’s posture towards the NDC noting how they were asked to redirect their proposal for electoral reforms to IPAC which is not a constitutional institution with an office anywhere but a body under the Electoral Commission.

Mr Mahama indicated that the NDC has re-sent the proposals now addressing it to IPAC, care of the Electoral Commission. He added that they have sent copies to religious, traditional and opinion leaders with whom they are having engagements on what the proposal entails and the need for such reforms.

When asked what the NDC will do if these reforms are not considered or adopted, Mr Mahama said that the NDC has equal numbers in parliament and is fortunate to have the speaker of parliament from their party and therefore will work with the speaker and their Members of Parliament to ensure that the right thing is done since it is parliament that has the power to approve electoral reforms.

The 2020 flagbearer of the NDC is in the Ashanti Region today to engage with religious and traditional leaders, interact with NDC supporters, as well as thank the voters in the region for the votes in the 2020 election.
