Kennedy Agyapong to contest for NPP flagbearer position
Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin Central Member of Parliament, has indicated that he will run in the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries ahead of the 2024 general elections. According to a 3news report, the maverick lawmaker revealed this while speaking during a session on his NET2 TV about his intention to lace his boots for the position.
In reference to the internal polls, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has instructed the NPP leadership to ensure that the election of the presidential candidate is conducted fairly.
He stated that fairness would limit the number of divisions that the contest would cause inside the party. Mr Akufo-Addo stated that, as with any competition, there will be disagreements within the party following the internal votes. He did say, though, that the flagbearer should be able to bring all of the fronts together.
The president said “I am hoping that level playing field that allows us to elect our next presidential candidate will also bring us a candidate who can unite our party. Because competition, inevitably, will bring some divisions in the party but we are the ruling party so, there is the responsibility on us to conduct ourselves in a way that reduces cracks.
“Cracks in the NPP can have a reflection on the state, we are the ruling party and if our base which is our party is fractured, that fracture can be translated into fracturing the state, nobody wants that,” he said on Accra based Peace FM last year.
Many people have been tipped to contest for the position as a replacement for President Akufo-Addo but prominent among them are Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Trade and Industry Miniter
