I would not have accepted to defend Aisha Huang – Mahama’s spokesperson
Spokesperson of Former President John Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari has explicitly stated that she would decline to take up the option to defend Aisha Huang regardless of how much she would be paid.
Speaking on TV3 on 13th October 2022, she said, “If I were in his shoes I would most likely not take a case like that due to the sensitivity and political twist to the issue”.
The legal practitioner cum politician’s thoughts come on the back of the recent revelation that accomplices of illegal mining kingpin Aisha Huang are being defended by the law firm of the immediate past Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay. That has got most Ghanaians talking considering his government’s struggle in fighting illegal mining.
Madam Bawa Mogtari indicated that such a situation strikes the thin line between morals and ethics and “because of the extreme partisanship situation at a certain stage you need to ask yourself if it is expedient to take up such a matter”.
She then narrated a similar instance she was almost caught up in like Freddie Blay. “I was approached with a tempting offer during the financial sector clean up but I had to decline. I have no doubt that I will not accept a brief like that due to the enormity of the matter”.
Putting some of her experiences as a legal practitioner into perspective, she said “while we move along this fields we have to make sure we do not create the wrong impression and be that as it may considering the facts on the ground we need to navigate these paths cautiously”.
