Allow us to implement E-levy if it will make us unpopular – NPP MP
Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Dr. Stephen Amoah has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) must be allowed to go on their fierce opposition to the passage of the E-levy.
Dr. Amoah, who is also a member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, cited Napoleon Bonaparte’s words, “Never stop your enemy while he is making a mistake,” in explaining how he is unable to understand why the NDC will not allow the government to approve the bill if it will make it unpopular.
“If NDC believes that the E-levy is a killer tax and will make the government unpopular, why are they not supporting us to dig our own grave which politically will inure to our misfortune in 2024?” he asked.
His assertions come ahead of an NDC town hall meeting slated for Monday, January 24, 2022, on the KNUST campus.
As part of the party’s campaign to gather opposition to the bill’s passing, the meeting would elaborate and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the E-Levy to Ghanaians.
The passage of the E-Levy, according to Dr. Amoah, will keep the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in opposition for a long time.
He explained that the NDC is afraid of the E-Levy passing because it will spur development and raise Ghanaians’ living standards, which is why they have been spreading misinformation and opposing it.
The Nhyiaeso lawmaker taunted the NDC to enable the government to approve the e-Levy and become unpopular if they believe the policy will be a disaster for the country’s economy, he said on Akoma FM’s current affairs and politics show GhanAkoma on Monday, January 24, 2022.
“The NDC is aware that there’s something good in the e-levy, that’s why they have mounted stern opposition to its passage because they know government will acquire enough proceeds to pursue developmental agenda hence their consistent”, Dr Stephen Amoah argued.
Meanwhile, the National Communications Officer of the NDC Sammy Gyamfi rejected Dr. Amoah’s claims and stated that “the NPP government has so far collected GH¢157 billion revenue and has nothing to show so what makes you think the e-levy will bring something new to the table?”
Mr. Gyamfi also reassured the public that the NDC is committed to ensuring that the government’s ‘killing taxes’ on Ghanaians be repealed.
