You’ve no right to ban Radio Ada from Asafotufiam festival – GJA boss to Ada Traditional Council
The feud between the Ada Traditional Council and Radio Ada which subsequently led the traditional council to prevent the station from covering the Asafotufiam Festival has left the Ghana Journalist Association disappointed, with the act having been described as an affront to press freedom.
One of the oldest community stations in Ghana was warned by the traditional council not to show up at the festival to cover the event due to some alleged verbal assault by some presenters of the station against some of the chiefs.
President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Mr Albert Dwufuor expressed his thoughts on the turn of events and did not agree with the traditional council’s reaction to the situation stating that they have no justification to prevent the radio station from carrying out its responsibility.
“GJA believes that the imposition of the restriction of the radio station and its reporters is unjustifiable. It is an affront to press freedom. With all due respect, the Ada Traditional Council does not have the right or powers to impose such restrictions on Radio Ada and its staff, particularly the mentioning of the names of staff. This is a threat to their lives and that of their families.”
Having called the situation a threat to the lives of workers in the station and to make sure they are safe, Mr Dwumfuor revealed that the police in the area assured him of optimum protection for the staff to enable them to go through their normal activities safely.
The people of the Ada Traditional Area in the Greater Accra Region celebrate the Asafotufiam festival in August every year.
